Change spoken languages ​​and subtitles

You can change subtitles on all devices directly in the player except for Chromecast, where you must first select the correct language before you start casting.

You can easily change the size and style of the subtitles. We offer four different options for size and style on computers, Smart TVs, and game consoles, where the default is white text on a gray background in medium size. On Apple and Android devices, the device’s accessibility settings are used to customize the subtitles.

Computers

Activate subtitles or audio tracks

Press the speech bubble icon for subtitles at the bottom right of the screen. Then select the subtitle or audio track you want.

Change size or style

Press the speech bubble icon for subtitles at the bottom right of the screen. Select Subtitle Settings and then the size or style you want to use.

Smart TVs and game consoles

Activate subtitles or audio tracks

On Smart TVs and game consoles, you change the language and subtitles by clicking the up or down arrow on the remote control when you are in the player. Then you get the menu up and can make your choice in Subtitles.

Change size or style

Go to the icon for subtitles and audio. Select Subtitle Size and Subtitle Style separately.

iPhone and iPad

Activate subtitles or audio tracks

Press the speech bubble icon for subtitles at the bottom right of the screen. Then select the subtitle or audio track you want.

Change size or style

Viaplay uses Apple’s global accessibility settings for editing and customizing subtitles.

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning > Style on the device.

Select a preset subtitle style or create your own style with a total of 8 different settings.

Apple TV

Activate subtitles or audio tracks

On Apple TV (gen. 3), you need to press the center button on the remote control for a few seconds and (gen. 4) swipe up/down.

Change size or style

Viaplay uses Apple’s global accessibility settings for editing and customizing subtitles.

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning > Style on the device.

Select a preset subtitle style or create your own style with a total of 8 different settings.

Android phones and tablets

Activate subtitles or audio tracks

Press the speech bubble icon for subtitles at the bottom right of the screen. Then select the subtitle or audio track you want.

Change size or style

Viaplay uses Android’s global accessibility settings for editing and customizing subtitles.

Go to: Settings > Accessibility > Caption Settings > Caption Size and Style

Select Text Size and Caption Style from preset options. There are also several custom options to further tailor the captioning based on font, color, background, and opacity.

Note: If you do not see exactly these options, your device or Android version may have slightly different names. Then use the search function in Settings and search for “Captioning” or “Subtitles”.

Android TV

Activate subtitles or audio tracks

Press the speech bubble icon for subtitles at the bottom right of the screen. Then select the subtitle or audio track you want.

Change size or style

Viaplay uses Android’s global accessibility settings for editing and customizing subtitles.

Go to: Settings > Device Settings > Accessibility > Captioning > Caption Style

Select Text Size and Caption Style from the preset options. There are also several customization options where you can adjust, for example, font, color, background, and transparency.

Note: If you do not see exactly these options, your device or Android version may have slightly different names. Then use the search function in Settings and search for “Captioning” or “Subtitles”.

Chromecast

If you’ve already connected your device to your Chromecast and then want to switch subtitles or alternate the language, you’ll need to start by disconnecting your device from your Chromecast. Then start playing what you want to watch directly on your device, select the language in the application and then reconnect to your Chromecast. You do this directly in the player via the Chromecast icon.

Audio tracks

You can change audio tracks and subtitles on the titles where we offer different options. Options for audio tracks are mainly available on children’s content. Note that not all children’s titles are available in multiple languages with us. If there are multiple languages, you can see them on the movie page and in the player.
