Change spoken languages ​​and subtitles

You can change subtitles and spoken languages directly in the player on most devices. For Chromecast, select the language before you start casting. You can also adjust subtitle size and style on most platforms.

How to switch subtitles or spoken languages

  1. Open the player and tap or select the speech bubble icon in the bottom right corner.
  2. Choose your preferred subtitle or audio track.

Note: If a title offers multiple spoken languages, these will appear in the player and on the title page. Multiple options are mainly available for kids’ content.

Computers

Activate subtitles or audio tracks 

  1. Select the speech bubble icon at the bottom right of the screen. 
  2. Choose your subtitle or audio track. 

Change subtitle size or style 

  1. Select the speech bubble icon again. 
  2. Choose Subtitle Settings. 
  3. Pick your preferred size or style. 
Smart TVs and game consoles

Activate subtitles or audio tracks 

  1. When in the player, press the up or down arrow on your remote. 
  2. Select your subtitle or audio track from the menu. 

Change subtitle size or style 

  1. Open the subtitles and audio icon. 
  2. Choose Subtitle Size and Subtitle Style separately. 
iPhone and iPad

Activate subtitles or audio tracks 

  1. Tap the speech bubble icon at the bottom right. 
  2. Select your subtitle or audio track.

Viaplay uses Apple’s global accessibility settings. 

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning > Style. 
  2. Choose a preset style or create your own with 8 customizable options. 

Note: AirPlay does not mirror your subtitle settings from iPhone or iPad. Adjust them directly on your Apple TV. 

Apple TV

Activate subtitles or audio tracks 

  • On Apple TV (Gen 3): Press and hold the center button on the remote. 
  • On Apple TV (Gen 4 or later): Swipe up or down on the remote. 

Change subtitle size or style 

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning > Style. 
  2. Choose a preset or create a custom style with 8 options. 
Android phones and tablets

Activate subtitles or audio tracks 

  1. Tap the speech bubble icon at the bottom right. 
  2. Select your subtitle or audio track. 

Change subtitle size or style
Viaplay uses Android’s accessibility settings. 

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Caption Settings > Caption Size and Style. 
  2. Adjust Text Size and Caption Style, or customize font, color, background, and opacity. 

Note: If options differ, use the search function in Settings and look for “Captioning” or “Subtitles”. 

Android TV

Activate subtitles or audio tracks 

  1. Tap the speech bubble icon at the bottom right. 
  2. Select your subtitle or audio track. 

Change subtitle size or style 

  1. Go to Settings > Device Settings > Accessibility > Captioning > Caption Style. 
  2. Adjust Text Size and Caption Style or customize font, color, and transparency. 

Note: If your Android TV has a different layout, use the search function in Settings and look for “Captioning” or “Subtitles”. 

Chromecast

You need to select the correct subtitle or language before casting. 

  1. Start playback on your device (not yet casting). 
  2. Choose your subtitle or audio language in the Viaplay app. 
  3. Connect to Chromecast using the Cast icon in the player. 

To switch language or subtitles while casting, disconnect first, adjust your settings, and then reconnect.

Audio Description
Some titles include audio description, a voice that narrates on-screen actions. To enable it, select the speech bubble icon and choose an audio track with audio description. 

Spoken Subtitles (SDH)
Content with spoken or read-aloud subtitles is marked with SDH next to the subtitle option. To enable, select the speech bubble icon and choose an audio track with audio description.
